Hey Reader, it's been a while! There's been a lot going on over the last couple of months since my last message! In that time I've been working on a lot of "life-things" in addition to the complete rebranding of Simplicity Specialist to be... less orange. Y'know when you've got that gut reaction that something isn't "quite right" in your business... yeah that happened. Something felt wrong, so I went and fixed it (with a little help) and it didn't require me to map out a plan, a schedule or a "step-by-step" guide. It just happened "naturally". And now I’ve got a new site that’s blue, purple and dark pink!! This experience was a vast difference from my last website rebuild many years ago My website built back thenLast time it was an absolute slog. I wanted to work efficiently (aka the "right" way) which meant I had to focus all my energy towards it… But instead I struggled to keep focus on it. I just wanted to work on something else... anything else. I sat there for hours going "I've gotta do this". I even set arbitrary deadlines... and guess what? It just never worked. I could never get moving, I kept getting stuck on all the tiny details. This was meant to take a week and it ended up taking multiple months... Each time I got distracted by thinking up new offers, I would get annoyed and frustrated. I needed to FOCUS. If I could just focus on this website, it'll be rebuilt... and my business will finally feel right. Eventually it got done, but I felt exhausted, frustrated and just fed up, which had a knock on effect on the business. Building my website this timeSo why was this time so successful? Instead of trying to force my focus in a specific direction, and assume that everything else I was doing was wrong, I got to enjoy working on multiple things at the same time. Which, I’ve learned, ends up creating opportunities for action. I didn't have any deep work sessions... nor did I set a "big deadline"... it was more of a ‘This is when I'd like it to be up! I also kept doing other things. I started mapping out content ideas, and I was doing a weekly podcast with a co-host. I was running/playing up to three sessions of D&D each week, and I was a heck of a lot less stressed about all of it. The difference: Perception. Perception is a funny concept. It's often believed to be "what you see." But the best description of perception is "intuition." It's a feeling, a gut reaction based on multiple interactions with the world you exist within. We all have pet names for it, but intuition really does have a big influence! Related Rabbit Hole - The Science of IntuitionIntuition might often be thought of as a mysterious, subconscious process, but there are a number of scientific theories that explain a little more about how direct this approach is: Ecological Psychology: This approach emphasises that we directly perceive opportunities for action (affordances) in our environment. In this context Intuition is about directly sensing and responding to these affordances without the need for "figuring it out". Also if you want to dive deeper take a look into The Extended Mind Thesis, which goes a little further. If Intuition is an emergent property of interacting with the world around us, we can see it not as something that happens to us, but something we actively do in response to our immediate environment. So What Changed?"Habits, deep work, deadlines… I tried them all. But it wasn’t until I understood my perception that things clicked." This time I shifted my awareness from habits towards action. The outcome became almost "secondary". I knew where I was heading but I assumed that each step I made would lead me to a finished website. I knew that I wanted a website that felt more "me" and fit what I cared about now. But I also understood the way I worked. Instead of working from a place of… I need to just focus on one thing. I would use my own way of working, and trust that I’m noticing an opportunity for action, I’ve not seen yet. There are always hundreds of decisions to make and there are multiple ways to do it. I’m hoping you can find your way of doing things. If you haven’t and you would love some help, let’s have a chat to see if I can help you get there. Book a free call here. And reply to let me know what is your preferred way of working. |
